DOES MEDICARE COVER MOBILE PHLEBOTOMY?
The short answer: Medicare usually covers the lab tests themselves — but the mobile collection fee is typically out-of-pocket. Here's the full picture.
The short answer
Medicare Part B generally covers medically necessary lab tests your doctor orders. It does not typically cover the separate mobile collection fee charged by an independent at-home phlebotomy service like GoPhlebLabs. The lab work and the home visit are two different charges.
What Medicare usually covers — and what it doesn't
- Medically necessary lab tests ordered by your doctor (Part B).
- Processing and analysis performed by a Medicare-enrolled laboratory.
- Routine screenings Medicare lists as preventive (e.g., certain cholesterol and diabetes screenings).
- The mobile collection / convenience fee for an independent phlebotomist coming to your home.
- Tests your doctor hasn't ordered or that Medicare doesn't consider medically necessary.
- Most concierge or wellness-only panels ordered without a qualifying diagnosis.
How billing actually works
Two separate bills, two separate payers. Here's the order of events:
- 1
Your doctor orders the lab work
The order specifies which tests are needed and includes a diagnosis code that the lab uses when billing Medicare.
- 2
GoPhlebLabs draws the sample at your home
You pay GoPhlebLabs directly for the mobile collection service at the time of booking. This is the part Medicare typically does not cover.
- 3
The sample goes to the testing laboratory
The lab (Quest, LabCorp, Sonora Quest, etc.) processes the tests and bills Medicare directly for the testing portion.
- 4
Medicare pays the lab for covered tests
If the tests are medically necessary and the lab is Medicare-enrolled, Part B generally covers the testing with no copay for most lab work.
On a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan?
Some Medicare Advantage plans include extra in-home benefits or wellness perks that Original Medicare doesn't. Coverage varies by insurer, plan, and region. Before booking, check your plan's benefits booklet or call the member services number on your card and ask specifically about coverage for in-home specimen collection.
How GoPhlebLabs handles it
- We're a collection service, not a billing service. You pay us directly for the mobile draw when you book.
- Your insurance details travel with the sample. We forward them to the testing laboratory so they can bill Medicare (or your secondary insurance) for the lab work.
- Transparent up front. The mobile collection fee is shown at booking — no surprise bills for the home visit later.
This page is general guidance, not insurance advice. Final coverage decisions depend on your specific plan, the tests ordered, and the lab's billing. When in doubt, call the number on the back of your Medicare card.
